Apparently working from the attitude that you can’t keep a good theater company down, Shakespeare Santa Cruz closes out a harrowing 2009 looking upward and onward to the future. The company announced its 2010 summer season today, presenting Shakespeare’s “Othello” and “Love’s Labour’s Lost” in the Festival Glen, and James Goldman’s classic 1966 play “The Lion in Winter” in the indoors Mainstage Theater.
The big news is that artistic director Marco Barricelli will take the stage. Barricelli earned his bones as a commanding actor for Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and ACT in San Francisco. So, he’s going back to his first love by playing the lead role in “Lion in Winter.”
The company has dealt with two near-death experiences in the last year, but they’re determined to emerge from this stressful period intact. The community, of course, has its role to play as well, and so far, SSC fans in the area have been the difference.
The new season opens in July. Here’s more details.
