New holiday shows fill the void left by Shakespeare Santa Cruz

19mixednutz02This year, Shakespeare Santa Cruz will not present its annual beloved holiday fairy tale. The show was a casualty of the company’s 2009 financial crisis. Turns out, there are plenty of performance organizations poised to fill that vacuum.

The first of them come this weekend with the release of Tandy Beal’s “Mixed Nutz,” a wild re-invention of “The Nutcracker,” which opens this weekend through Dec. 6. Also coming up is Actors’ Theatre take on Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.”

And, coming in December, will be Cabrillo Stage’s new holiday production “Scrooge” to play at the new Cabrillo Crocker Theatre.

That’s all great stuff. But we still miss you, “Gretel & Hansel.”
