There’s a place in the mountains near Santa Cruz, in a gorgeous little community called Bonny Doon. And from this place, locals and visitors will occasionally hear a massive pipe organ blasting through the redwoods as if they had just stepped into an 18th-century Prussian cathedral.
That molar-rattling sound is coming from Boomeria, the home of former high-school teacher Preston Boomer (known as Boom) who has been building and playing an enormous pipe organ near his home since rescuing the original from a church in San Jose in 1953.
Boomeria is again going to be the site of a Santa Cruz Baroque Festival concert on July 11. I got a chance to visit Boom and his magnificent instrument this week. Look for our story in an upcoming edition of the Sentinel.
