Sweet sounds

Anyone who grew up in the 1970s probably remembers the British pop band Sweet (or The Sweet), and their hits such as “Little Willy,” “Fox on the Run” and “Ballroom Blitz.” If you turned 10 anytime between 1970 and 1975, it was pretty difficult to resist the loopy, criminally infectious bubble-gum melodies mixed with the high-octane neo-metal band energy.

Is it still there for the Sweet? Those of us in Santa Cruz will have a chance to find out when the band comes to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk as part of the Boardwalk’s summer music series. The group just announced its coming to the Boardwalk on Aug. 28. Want to get charged up for it? The Sweet has just released a two-disc compilation of their best stuff. Let’s see if “Fox on the Run” still sounds as great as it did in the Nixon years. Strangely, hearing that again makes me want to go roller skating.
