Filmmaker on the rise?

We’re all about cool things to do that are free (and free things to do that are cool). This event qualifies on both counts. For the next three nights, Santa Cruz filmmaker Jono Schaferkotter and his crew will be debuting his sharp new short film “Spaceman” in downtown Santa Cruz.
You might remember Schaferkotter for his zany zombie film called ‘The Beginning’ that played locally back in 2006. This time out, he’s done a short (14 minutes) film that combines understated special effects and nice acting to illustrate the difficulties of beginning a relationship. It’s a fanciful vignette of a romantic encounter between a cheery redhead and a man immersed in a fantasy that he’s a spaceship captain searching the universe for signs of life. Actors Hamid Nayini and Jennifer Allcott make for an appealing couple.
The short film will be premiered tonight, Friday and Saturday at 515 Kitchen & Cocktails, at 515 Cedar St., Santa Cruz. Things get started at 10 p.m. and it’s all free.
