A Washington story

Well more than 24 hours after Barack Obama’s swearing-in and inaugural address, I’m just now putting myself back together enough to reflect on what has happened.
The cold — brutal, epic, punishing cold — was really the only impediment to what was otherwise close to an ecstatic experience. That’s not so much a commentary on the incoming president, but in the vibrant mood of the crowd, many of whom were feeling unalloyed patriotism for the first time in a long time.
My brother Michael, an all-in Obama supporter, actually snapped the staff of the little American flag from waving in too much. The moment when Aretha Franklin sang ‘My Country, Tis of Thee,’ I was surrounded by people singing along even through the cold. Man, that song never sounded so fine.
